Barbados

Barbados is an eastern Caribbean island and an independent British Commonwealth nation. Bridgetown, the capital, is a cruise-ship port with colonial buildings and Nidhe Israel, a synagogue founded in 1654. Around the island are beaches, botanical gardens, the Harrison’s Cave formation, and 17th-century plantation houses like St. Nicholas Abbey. Local traditions include afternoon tea and cricket, the national sport.

The west coast is home to upmarket beach hotels, golf courses and calm waters. The southeast and east coasts are known for big waves, especially at the Soup Bowl, pink-sand Crane Beach and Silver Sands, a renowned windsurfing spot. The rugged east coast also offers cliffside hiking. The island’s most famous beverage is the star of tours at the Mount Gay Rum distillery, while its signature foods include flying fish and macaroni pie. Windjammer cruises to surrounding coral reefs offer diving and snorkeling with sea turtles and other native wildlife.
